💬 Thursday Comment Thread: What's Been Your Greatest Investing Success Story?
It's time to hear from you!
The ETF Focus Rewind newsletter has now officially reached more than 1,000 free signups and for that I am incredibly grateful! There’s a real community of avid investors growing here and that includes everyone from retirees looking for the best approach to generating income from their portfolios to those just getting started for the first time to everyone in between!
That means there are a lot of backstories and I want to hear yours!
As the community grows, I want to pose a question once a week, so I can hear from you, get a sense of what you’re looking for in your investing journey and just share some ideas and stories!
This week, I want to hear about your greatest investing success story! Did you double your money? Triple your money? Even better? Go ahead and brag a little!
I’ll start with mine, which eventually turned out to be my greatest investing failure too!
It happened during the tech bubble in 2000. This was a time when if a major brokerage house put out a new price target on an internet stock, it hit that target within a matter of days. I happened to be watching CNBC one morning when the news broke that some analyst had slapped a $200 price target on Internet Capital Group (ICGE), which operated as an internet company venture capital firm. I immediately logged onto my online brokerage account and bought a bunch of shares at $117. By the end of the day, it was trading at $140. Within a few weeks, it had risen as high as $212. I had nearly doubled my money in less than a month.
In a future thread, I’ll share the failure part of the story (it’s depressing as I think back on it now), but that’s a story for another day. Today, let’s hear about your biggest wins! Share your story below in the comments!
